It is normal to be a bit nervous when going to see a new therapist for the first time. Try to remember that I am not here to judge or evaluate you, rather to assist you in resolving problems. Most clients find that they feel more relaxed once the initial session gets underway. During the first session, we talk about the reasons you are seeking therapy, and I answer questions you may have about the process.
There is also paperwork to be completed, which you can get started ahead of time by clicking mandatory disclosure (client consent for treatment) and client information form. Reading and filling out these forms will maximize the time we have to talk about the reasons you're seeking help. -
Most often, clients come for psychotherapy once a week, and sessions generally last 50 minutes. Although the exact duration of treatment is hard to predict, I can provide an estimate after we discuss your goals for therapy.

Therapy sessions typically involve talking, but depending on your needs and preferences, therapy might also involve writing, drawing, or role-playing. Although therapy is not school, there might be times when I teach (for example, relaxation skills to help you manage stress, or communication skills to improve relationships) or when I ask you to do homework (for example, keeping track of your moods or arguments you have).
Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings like sadness, anxiety, guilt, or anger. On the other hand, although there is no guarantee of a particular outcome, most people experience significant benefits from treatment. Therapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems, and relief from feelings of distress.

Please talk with me regarding my fee. My standard session is 50 minutes long, and my fee for longer/shorter sessions is pro-rated. I request payment by check, cash, or Venmo at the time service is rendered. I am not a member of any managed care panels. If you have insurance coverage for psychological services, you will need to check with your provider about how to file a claim. My fees may be deductible as medical expenses on your income tax return; please check with a tax advisor for guidance.

It is important that you know that I am not able to provide round-the-clock supportive services or emergency care. Still, my clients are free to call me in between our regularly scheduled sessions. I return calls as soon as I can (generally within 24 hours) and I do not charge for brief conversations.

Confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychotherapy. In general, communications between a client and a psychologist are considered private and protected by law. In other words, I cannot share information about our work unless I have your written permission to do so. However, there are a few exceptions to this general rule, which we will talk about during our initial session—and which you can view by reading the mandatory disclosure.
